The understanding of microscopic and thermo-mechanical properties is at the core of materials science research. Here we look at how mechanical characterisation can be used to observe and image materials at the microscale. We outline the theory of tensile testing and explore various industrial and research applications that utilise stress-strain analysis. We also introduce the modular force testing concept, enabling temperature, humidity and gas environment control, as well as options for electronic probes in conjunction with tensile testing.

Linkam’s MFS (Modular Force Stage, shown below) is able to perform a wide range of mechanical tests, including those detailed here. With its modular grips, heating and humidity options, and gas purging and vacuum compatibility, the MFS can be adapted for any application.
